It's the Year of the Dog at Pooches!

Hard to believe it's already 2010! The new year marks a new beginning for Pooches and all of the great dogs who come to play with us. We have settled into our new location, we have a great bunch of employees (the same faces you know and love plus a few new ones you're going to learn to love!), and we have a bunch of new programs and promotions to come! To say that we are excited just doesn't really even scratch the surface of our enthusiasm.

Our new training classes will start in mid-January. We are shifting to a levels program which means that our classes will constantly be in session. You never have to wait for a new class to start. You just join in! We remain dedicated to positive motivation training and relationship building with your dog. Training does not have to be correction based or a "shocking" experience. Come visit with one of our four certified trainers and discover the fun you can have training with your pooch. We will get results!

Let's see...school photos will be taken throughout the month of January (and will continue until everyone has their smiling face on our wall of fame!). We have some fun things in mind for Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day as well. So much to come!
In the meantime, we hope everyone will stop by for a tour of our beautiful new facility. We're still working on some finishing touches, but we think this place is pretty darn special and the dogs are enjoying it as I type.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! No matter what the Chinese calendar says, it's ALWAYS the year of the dog at Pooches!

Pooches on the MOVE!

Well, it's finally here. The big move to our new, bigger, better, fancier, funner (English teachers everywhere may now collectively shudder!) location takes place THIS WEEKEND! EEEEEK! Workers are busy getting the last details in place--you know, like FENCES! But we will be there Monday, 11/23, ready for business. We will still have a little unpacking and decorating to do, but it's time to get over there and make it happen. We know our existing customers are going to be excited when they see the place and we hope that several new customers come check us out as well. Everything we are doing is for the benefit of our beloved canine family.

Our new location features more than 10,000 square feet of space. We have seven play rings, a beautiful grooming spa, a dedicated training room, comfortable suites for overnight guests and yes, we do still have an outside yard! You can see Jimmy and Sasha trying out a couple of our private suites just after they were installed. Don't worry kids! We'll make sure you have comfy cots and blankets when you come for a real stay!

The new address is 5331 E. 41st. If you head east of Yale on 41st, you can turn north at the light on Darlington or past that at TGI Fridays. Pooches will be in the corner next door to JoAnne's Fabrics. Come see our new space and leave your four-legged friend for some fun and games!

Puppy Love!

We adore all of the dogs that come to visit us at Pooches, but boy do the puppies make our day. We have had a parade of adorable new babies coming through the door lately. Pictured you see Jack, a three month old English bulldog. He joins the likes of baby Grace, the mini dachshund; Otis, the black pug; Lulu, the fawn pug; Lily, the whippet; Bruno, the Logotto Romagnolo (yeah, we didn't know what that was either! It's an Italian breed); Milo and Hugo, our baby beagles; Sookie, the Boston terrier and most recently Maddie, the white boxer girl (with the pink toenail polish!) and a little Australian shepherd boy who still awaits his new name! I'm sure I'm forgetting someone...if so, my apologies. I'll be sure to add our other babies in future posts.
Part of what is fun about these babies is obvious. Puppy breath, cuddles, cute beyond imagination. The fun that may not be so obvious when these puppies join our fold is that we get the chance to help them grow up. We actively participate with families in house training and teaching some basic manners--all disguised by fun and games. Many of our babies also come to our group puppy classes for more fun training.
We are very honored when people trust us to care for their new puppies. It is a responsibility we take very seriously and VERY happily. Next time you stop by you might want to peek behind the front desk. The tiny puppies generally hang out there with Aunt Betty until they are old enough/big enough to join the real play groups. We love our puppies!
Puppies must receive at least two rounds of shots before they can join the fun at Pooches.

Howliday weekend?

For most people, the Labor Day weekend is the last hurrah of summer. It's that wonderful long weekend off where everyone cooks out, heads to the lake, sleeps in, gathers with friends, etc., etc. However, for people who choose to be in the service industry, let's say dog care for example, this is just one huge/busy weekend of work.

Let me clarify that thought...I am NOT complaining. Pooches has been a dream come true and being wildly busy on a holiday weekend is a terrific "problem" to have. It was very gratifying yesterday (Friday) to see the parade of much-loved dogs coming in to spend the weekend with us. Having these wonderful people entrust their beloved dogs to our care is very flattering and a responsibility we take very seriously. To help our evening shift go a bit more smoothly, I dished up all of the dogs' dinners prior to close. I love seeing how the owners specify how much their dog is to eat and how the food is to be prepared. I love making sure the special treats are included with the meals so the dogs feel right at home. I love looking through each dog's bin to see the treasures sent along by caring families. Buster has a stuffed gorilla. Toby and Trigger have special toys we are to stuff with goodies. Maddy has her own comfy plush bed. The list goes on and on.

As we were setting up the overnight suites for each of the dogs, I felt really good about how things are done at Pooches. This is not just me bragging on our business. It has been a true learning experience and the education is ongoing. But I do think we offer something that is a huge step apart from other boarding experiences. We do spend time with each dog. We do work hard to make sure each dog is fed exactly as the owner requests and that toys are tucked in with them on comfortable cots with soft blankets. We do go that extra distance to be sure our dogs get to potty late in the evening (after most boarding facilities are long closed) to help ensure a restful night. And we do it all because we truly love these dogs. We take extra care and spend the extra dollar because it's how we would want our own dogs treated. That is our mission...treat each dog that crosses our threshold as if it were one of our own.

We hope the difference shows in the wagging tails and relaxed, happy attitudes of our canine guests. If they are happy, we are happy and all of the work is very worthwhile. Afterall, this should be a holiday weekend for our pooches as well!

A new week, a new start.

A couple of weeks ago I posted about a little Dalmatian girl named Faye. Jim and I rescued her from the Fayetteville Animal Shelter. Well, "rescued from" isn't exactly right. The great folks at that shelter took excellent care of Faye, tracked us down and held her until we could come get her. Oh, and our contact come in on her Sunday off to let us pick Faye up. What great people!

Anyhow, we posted Faye on the TulsaDals.org website and almost the moment I uploaded her photo, we got inquiries. Young Dalmatians are a bit rare in rescue these days now that the Dalmatian craze has ended (sidenote: Disney, I'm begging you--keep 101 in the vault!). I had e-mail after e-mail and call after call asking about Faye. Each and every caller sure seemed like a great potential home. Just about all of them had similar tales to tell...just lost my teenage Dalmatian and Faye reminds me of her.

The first inquiry came from a couple from the Kansas City area. Frank and Karen lost their sweet Dalmatian girl about a year ago to kidney disease. We talked and talked, they sent in their application, we talked some more. They were heading off on a driving trip and would arrange for their final leg to pass through Tulsa so they could meet little Faye in person.

The meeting went so well and Frank and Karen were everything we hoped they would be. So after a two week visit in Tulsa, Faye is heading to her forever home as I type. While she was a bit confused heading out the door, and yes, she looked over her shoulder a few times (this is the HARDEST part of being a foster parent! How in the world do you tell them that leaving the safety and security of our home is a good thing?), I know she is in great hands and headed for a very happy life where she'll have a Dachshund friend to boot!

Best wishes Faye. We enjoyed your visit and love you dearly. You will soon love your new parents even more than you loved us and we're ok with that.

Funny things the dogs do. Part 1

Not a day goes by that the dogs don't have us laughing at some point...likely several points throughout the day. One of my favorite moments/least favorite moments is the daily howl. Let me explain the love/hate feelings I have for this entertaining event.

Just about every day, the dogs will decide to throw their heads back and howl to the ceiling, or the dog gods, or the ghosts that likely inhabit our old building. It's hard to pinpoint what inspires the howl. Sometimes it will happen if there are a lot of people passing by the playroom windows. Noon on Wednesday is a great time to howl--that's the weekly scheduled test time for the city tornado sirens (or are they flood sirens? GREAT. If I ever hear them for real I won't know whether to duck and cover or run for higher ground. Mental note: find out what the sirens mean!). Sometimes I think they just do it whenever the mood strikes.

The leading culprit in starting the howl in the big dog group is Cash. Yep, no withholding names to protect the not-so-innocent here. It is Cash, our beloved red guy who has been coming to Pooches almost since the day we opened in the fall of 2005. Cash is a GREAT dog. He is so easy to handle and he gets along with any dog that comes to play. Everyone loves Cash. But boy can he get the crowd going!

In the early days of our business when we were still building our customer base and introducing Pooches to the community, we didn't have a full house and the daily howl was just fun/funny. Cash would toss his head back, form a little "o" with his lips and start singing. Pretty soon all the dogs in attendance would join in and, what the heck, the humans caring for the dogs joined in too!We had one heck of an opera going. Did we stop to wonder what passersby might think of three or four people sitting in the middle of 20 dogs, howling to the heavens? Nah. We're dog people. We don't care what you think!

Now, however, we have a few more dogs spread throughout our facility. And while the howl is initially still fun/funny, after a few moments it becomes absolutely ear splitting. If we could get the dogs to sing in rounds, it would still be acceptable, but all at once? Well, the decibel level easily rivals the tornado/flood sirens.

So how do you stop the madness? Well, if you're around when the howl starts, rather hearing the humans join in, you are likely to hear a chorus of people calling out "CASH!" You see, we have found that the dog who starts the ruckus is also the dog who can stop it! If Cash sings, everyone sings. If Cash stops, everyone stops. What I would give for a fraction of Cash's power...

So...what DO the dogs do all day?

We get this question a lot. Well, the dogs play. They play with each other, they play with toys, they play with their Pooches human friends. Some dogs enjoy a little training during the day (by owner request). All dogs get hugs, pats and belly rubs. They go outside often to take care of business and enjoy the day. They play in the water buckets (though we don't encourage this one!), they sometimes play with their dog beds or cots (we don't encourage this one either!). Sometimes they smash their ring attendants (while we don't encourage this activity, it can be pretty dang funny). Some days we rev up the good old bubble machine and many of the dogs have a great time chasing and popping bubbles. We have kong toys, kong rubber balls, nylabones, and other TOUGH AS HECK toys. And yes, as you can see in the photo, the dogs do take naps. You can't play the WHOLE day and they also enjoy chilling out together. Of course the play time lasts a lot longer than the quiet time, but they do get some down time. Through natural play, the dogs get great socialization and exercise, and of course, the pros at Pooches are always there to supervise all the action to be sure everyone plays fair and has a good time.

Oh...and the wet spot you see in the photo...it's NOT what you might think it is. I promise. It's just a freshly mopped spot. Not to say that it wasn't previously what you might have been thinking...
